Toyota sales growth outpaces Nissan, Honda in 2018

UMS Institute | 2019/2/11

Toyota Motor Corp. recorded double-digit sales growth despite the downturn in the Chinese auto market in 2018 but rivals Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co.  generated smaller gains.

Combined China sales of the Toyota and Lexus brands rose 14 percent to a record 1.47 million in 2018, Toyota’s China office said.

Toyota brand deliveries increased 13 percent to top 1.3 million behind demand for new models developed on a new global vehicle architecture, known as TNGA. The products include new models such as the C-HR subcompact crossover and Izoa sedan and redesigned Camry Corolla and Levin sedans.

Lexus deliveries jumped 21 percent to approach 160,500 on volume generated by the NX and RX crossovers and the ES sedan.

In 2018, Nissan Motor Co. delivered 1.56 million vehicles in China, an increase of 2.9 percent from 2017. Honda Motor Co.’s local sales were flat at 1.43 million.

Nissan and Honda didn’t disclose separate sales for their respective luxury brands, Infiniti and Acura, in China last year.

The performance of two smaller Japanese auto manufacturers -- Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. -- were also mixed in 2018.

Mazda sales slumped 12 percent to 272,322. By contrast, Mitsubishi deliveries surged 23 percent to 144,018.
